Freezing of water in portland cement paste - an ac impedance spectroscopy study
نویسنده
چکیده
The freezing of water in Portland cement paste was investigated using a.c. impedance spectroscopy techniques. Length change and impedance measurements on cooling and warming were obtained simultaneously using a specially designed coupling technique. A new descriptor of frost resistance is described in terms of the high frequency arc depression angle in the impedance plane. Curves of the depression angle parameter ? versus temperature are shown to be indicative of the pore structure and its effect on mass transfer of water and nucleation and growth of ice crystals. The ? temperature and resistance-temperature curves are used in combination to assess structural damage. Results are compared with those obtained for model pore systems i.e. vycor glass and clay brick.

Interfacial transition zone characterization of Portland cement mortars containing relatively high dosages of polynaphthalene sulfonate superplasticizers
The microstructure and interfacial transition zone characteristics of Portland cement mortars prepared with a polynaphthalene sulfate (PNS) superplasticizer at relatively high dosages (0.8%, 1.5% by mass of cement) and varying sand-to-cement ratios (0.5, 1.0, 1.5) were investigated, using AC impedance spectroscopy, mercury intrusion porosimetry, helium pycnometry and two electrical conductance ...
متن کاملEFFECT OF POLYVINYL ALCOHOL ON FLEXURAL STRENGTH AND SOME IMPORTANT PHYSICALPROPERTIES OFPORTLAND CEMENT PASTE
Abstract: This work was designed to investigate the simultaneous effect of both water-to-cement (W/C) and polymer-to-cement(P/C) ratios on flexural strength of type V Portland cement pastes containing polyvinyl alcohol. The obtained resultsconfirmed the strong effect of W/C-ratio on the effectiveness of the added polymer so that there exist optimum valuesfor both W/C and P/C-ratios. Pastes prep...
متن کاملMicro- and nano-structural evolutions in white Portland cement/pulverized fuel ash cement pastes due to deionized-water leaching
Thin slices of white Portland cement-low calcium pulverized fuel ash (pfa) blended cement pastes containing 30 or 50% pfa were leached progressively in de-ionized water. The paste with 50% pfa was aged 13 years prior to leaching and those with 30% pfa were aged 1 and 13 years. Pastes were leached for up to 75 days and were characterized using thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, analytical scan...
متن کاملFrequency-dependent electrical mixing law behavior in spherical particle composites
The electrical properties of cement-based composites with mono-size conductive (steel) or insulating (glass) spherical inclusions were investigated by combined 2-point impedance spectroscopy and 4-point dc resistance measurements. The matrix was ordinary Portland cement (w/c = 0.4; cured for 7 days). Particle loading was varied over an extended range to as high as 42% volume fraction. The steel...
متن کاملThe Effect of Curing Temperature on White Cement Hydration
Cement manufacture has undergone extensive change in its attempts to rise to the successive challenges posed by society. The hydration of Portland cement is a complex phenomenon that depends on both reagent characteristics and reaction conditions. It is a well-known fact that the curing temperature plays an important role on the hydration kinetics. The present study is the first to be undertake...
